Election Spending Scandal: Koonjoo-Shah Takes Action Against 3 MPs

In a turn of events, Kalpana Koonjoo-Shah has made headlines by lodging a formal complaint against three elected representatives from the Alliance du Changement in the Piton/Rivière-du-Rempart constituency (No. 7). Accompanied by her lawyer, Ravi Rutnah, Koonjoo-Shah took to the courts on Saturday, 1 February, motivated by her concerns as a resident and voter in the area.
The former minister has discovered, through the candidates’ affidavits, that their election spending during the last legislative elections has far exceeded the legal limit of Rs 150,000. The staggering figures are as follows:
🔹 Raj Pentiah: Rs 187,930
🔹 Kaviraj Sukon: Rs 233,600
🔹 Sandeep Prayag: Rs 221,557
Koonjoo-Shah firmly believes that these three officials have breached the Representation of the People Act and is urging the police to launch a thorough investigation.
But she is not alone in her quest for accountability. Former MSM minister, Stephan Toussaint, has also filed a similar complaint against Labour MP Kevin Luckeeram from constituency No. 11 (Mahébourg/Plaine-Magnien).
Moreover, the issue of excessive election spending does not seem to be isolated. Minister Richard Duval, Junior Minister Véronique Leu-Govind, and Rodrigues MP Roxana Collet have also been identified as having crossed the Rs 150,000 threshold.
