Mauritius is on alert class I cyclone warning has been officially issued this February 1. As of 4 AM, a tropical depression was located approximately 650 km northeast of the island, pinpointed at latitude 17.4 degrees south and longitude 63.0 degrees east. The storm system is moving west-southwest at a brisk pace of around 20 km/h, edging ever closer to our shores and bringing an unsettling sense of foreboding.

Recent satellite imagery revealed a concerning increase in activity near the storm’s centre, indicating that the environmental conditions may permit further intensification.

If this cyclone escalated into a moderate tropical storm, it will be named Fiaida—a name that could soon become synonymous with our current plight.
