Rodrigues Island is currently under a Class I cyclone alert, as confirmed by the Mauritius Meteorological Services in an official bulletin released on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at 10:10 AM. A tropical storm, expected to be named Faida, is intensifying and poses a significant threat to the island.

As of 10:00 AM, the tropical depression was located approximately 890 kilometers east-northeast of Rodrigues, with coordinates of 16.0° south and 70.9° east.

The system is moving at a speed of 20 km/h towards the west-southwest and is experiencing favorable environmental conditions conducive to further intensification.

Forecasters predict that it could reach moderate tropical storm status by the end of the day.

Given its current trajectory, the cyclone is gradually approaching Rodrigues and represents a potential danger for the island.

Authorities are urging residents to take preliminary precautions in anticipation of the expected effects beginning as early as Friday, January 31.

Outer cloud bands associated with the system are expected to bring rain showers to the island.

Winds will be blowing from the east-southeast at approximately 20 km/h, with a gradual increase in strength and expected gusts.

The sea, which is currently moderate, is anticipated to become increasingly turbulent beyond the reefs, prompting officials to advise against any sea excursions.

The Mauritius Meteorological Services will issue another bulletin at 4:10 PM to provide updates on the evolving situation.

Residents of Rodrigues are advised to remain vigilant and prepare for the storm’s imminent arrival.
