Alarming Conditions of Local Markets, A Call for Urgent Action

Recent inspections have revealed a troubling situation in the central markets of Port-Louis, Mahebourg & Rose-Belle , where many lack fire safety certificates. This issue has been labeled as “absurd” by the Minister of Local Government, Ranjiv Woochit, who has been conducting on-site visits over the past few weeks.

The findings highlight significant shortcomings in both safety and hygiene standards across various markets on the island.

Besides the absence of fire safety certificates, the minister pointed out the surge of illegal street vendors, which disrupt established merchants and contribute to a general state of disorder.

Observations included deplorable hygiene conditions, such as unsanitary restrooms, poorly maintained markets, and the presence of flies.

Additionally, officials noted exposed electrical wires, inadequate lighting, and a lack of proper ventilation.

According to Woochit, these issues stem largely from years of negligence under previous administrations.

The District Councils, which are responsible for the oversight of these markets, have failed to fulfill their duties satisfactorily.

The minister has expressed his commitment to addressing this situation.

In response to these alarming conditions, Woochit announced plans for swift corrective measures.

Proposed actions are including securing fire safety certificates for all markets, ensuring regular cleanups, renovating restrooms, and combating pest infestations.

Furthermore, the overflowing septic tank at the Mahebourg market may be rectified by upgrading the facilities.

The minister also noted that improvements have already been made in some markets, such as the one in Triolet.

The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated, as these steps aim not only to enhance safety but also to restore the dignity and functionality of the markets.
