MCiné is set to open seven new cinema halls at Tribeca Mall in early March 2025, according to the cinema’s director, Rajesh Callicharan. The announcement came as a highly-anticipated animation and live-action film, “Buddy in Moris,” featuring the beauty of Mauritius, preparing for its release.

The decision to establish seven new operational halls at once is driven by a vast increase in available content, Callicharan explained.

Just last Friday, January 17, a Malayalam thriller titled “Marco,” directed by Haneef Adeni, made its debut at the Trianon cinema, marking a significant step in diversifying film offerings for local audiences.

“Marco” is scheduled to be screened in both Malayalam and Hindi, further showcasing the cinema’s commitment to a variety of languages and genres.

In addition to Indian films, MCiné is aiming to present a range of international cinema, including Japanese and Korean films, available in original language or dubbed in French.

There is also a focus on Telugu and Tamil films, planning to provide space for these diverse cinema types.

According to Callicharan, “This is a distinct market that we wish to develop.”

Despite perceptions about the small size of the local market, MCiné is optimistic.

“After the COVID-19 pandemic, we noticed a shift in audience attitudes,” Callicharan noted.

For instance, while dubbed Japanese animated films did not attract much interest, original versions in subtitled formats drew favorable responses from viewers.

“This reflects a growing appreciation for authentic cinema experiences,” he added.

The new cinemas at Tribeca Mall will prioritize audience comfort with reclining seats, while the sound quality will be enhanced by Dolby Atmos technology.

The Italian Cine Meccanica equipment is currently being installed, with an investment of approximately Rs 60 million for the seven halls, just for the equipment, while infrastructure costs are being covered by Tribeca Mall.

Looking back at 2024, Callicharan pointed out that the highest-grossing film was “Pushpa 2: The Rule,” a Telugu film starring Allu Arjun.

Disney productions, including “Moana 2” and “Mufasa: The Lion King,” also drew significant crowds.

Among the seven cinema halls, one will be designated as a VVIP space, featuring fewer seats—52 in a hall that can accommodate 150 to 200 people.

Although ticket prices for the VVIP hall have yet to be finalized, Callicharan assured potential customers that they will remain affordable, likely priced at double that of a standard ticket.

In a market where the cost of living has risen, standard ticket prices remained at Rs 250.

Callicharan explained that the number of attendees significantly affects the cinema experience, stating his preference for busier screenings.

Meanwhile, construction on the MCiné Curepipe expansion is currently halted.

“We can’t be everywhere at once,” Callicharan explained, noting that one hall is operational and efforts are underway to double the number of screens at Trianon from three to six.

Looking ahead, there may be an eventual expansion into the northern region of Mauritius, possibly in Grand Baie.

“This is not an immediate plan, but we’re considering it due to increased demand,” Callicharan concluded. MCiné currently operates in Port-Louis, Trianon, Curepipe, and Flacq.
