A joint operation conducted by the Emergency Response Service (ERS) and various units from the Western Division took place on January 15, targeting undocumented foreigners residing in Mauritius. Starting at 10:30 AM, the operation focused on a restaurant located on Saint-Jean Street in Quatre-Bornes, where a total of 17 foreigners were apprehended.

Among those arrested were 12 Malagasy nationals, comprised of seven women and five men, and five Bangladeshis, including two women and three men.

The 35-year-old owner of the restaurant, a local resident, has been charged for employing non-Mauritian citizens without the appropriate legal authorization.

The authorities also identified additional violations within the establishment.

A 23-year-old employee, also a local resident, faces charges for misusing domestic gas for purposes other than household needs.

Additionally, the restaurant’s manager, aged 41, was penalized for failing to display mandatory safety notices regarding the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption and the prohibition of alcohol sales to minors.

The operation commenced earlier that morning at 8:30 AM when police conducted checks on six foreigners along Vacoas Road in Candos.

This group included four Indians, one Bangladeshi, and a Nigerian, all of whom were arrested for illegal residency.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Division, in collaboration with the ERS, extended their checks along the main road in Providence, where five more Malagasy nationals were apprehended for similar immigration violations.

According to police officials, these operations reflect the authorities’ commitment to addressing immigration infractions and ensuring compliance with commercial regulations.

They reminded employers of their responsibility to verify the legal status of their foreign employees, warning of potential sanctions for non-compliance.

Furthermore, they emphasized the necessity of adhering to safety standards, particularly regarding the use of domestic gas and the display of warning signs in commercial establishments.

The arrested individuals have been placed in custody and will be brought before the courts.

The undocumented foreigners are expected to be repatriated to their respective countries.
