Chagos Discussions with the UK Have Led to a Final Document

The future of the Chagos Agreement now rests in the hands of Donald Trump, who will be inaugurated as the President of the United States tonight at 9 PM local time in Mauritius, during a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
This Monday, January 20, during an interview with the BBC, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the importance of allowing the new American administration to review the agreement concerning the American-British military base at Diego Garcia.
According to Gavin Glover, discussions with the UK have culminated in the drafting of a final document regarding the agreement.
This deal on the restitution of the Chagos Archipelago still requires approval from the new US administration under President Trump.
“We are pleased that these negotiations have produced this document. The treaty itself, in its final form, could be signed if everyone is in agreement and ready to sign,” Gavin Glover stated.
In Mauritius, opinions about the agreement are mixed, oscillating between hope and realism.
“The base is under American and British control. We thus understand London’s position.
Mauritius is at the mercy of what the Americans will communicate to the British,” the Attorney General noted, while expressing confidence that the process would proceed smoothly, potentially resulting in the signing of the agreement in the coming weeks.
The terms of the agreement suggest that the UK would maintain control of the Diego Garcia military base through a 99-year lease.
Former President Joe Biden indicated that this arrangement would ensure the base remains operational for the foreseeable future.
However, Marco Rubio, designated by Trump as Secretary of State, has asserted that the agreement poses a threat to US security by transferring the archipelago, which hosts long-range bombers and American naval vessels, to Mauritius—a country perceived as a potential ally of China.
The Mauritian government is actively working to counter this disinformation campaign.
