Central Market Fire Causes Damage to 7 Vendors’ Stalls

A fire broke out at the Port-Louis Central Market on Wednesday, January 15, around 6 PM. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene and managed to extinguish the flames within approximately thirty minutes.
The blaze caused damage to the stalls of seven vendors, although fortunately, there were no reported injuries.
At this point, the cause of the fire remained unclear, and an investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
This morning, vendors who returned to the market expressed their frustrations regarding emergency preparedness.
They noted that the firefighting tools available on-site were inaccessible due to a locked storage room, and the key was not kept on the premises.
One vendor lamented, “The fire could have been controlled more quickly!”
Authorities are working to shed light on the incident while vendors assess the impact of the damage to their livelihoods.
