The proposed marina project at Grand Baie, led by Sea Blue Mountain Ltd, is facing significant opposition from local residents. Marie-Louise Jowree, the president of the Grand Baie Village Council, confirmed that the community is firmly against the initiative and plans to reach out to relevant authorities for appropriate action.

Jean-François Jowree, another member of the Village Council, clarified the situation regarding the developer’s claims.

“Earlier this week, the promoter stated that they requested a meeting with the villagers through the Village Council, but that is not true,” he said.

“The Village Council of Grand Baie had already rejected their request for a meeting on December 17.

Instead, the developers held an unapproved gathering on-site with around thirty people, during which everyone protested vehemently.”

He assured residents that no official meeting had been scheduled with the developers.

“The locals are determined not to repeat the experiences they had with a similar project in the past, which resulted in the privatization of land that used to be public space.

Residents are now unable to access this part of the beach,” he lamented.

The opposition from the Grand Baie community highlights their concerns about preserving public spaces and maintaining access to the coastline.

As tensions rise, the outcome of this proposed development remains uncertain.
