UK Proposes £9 Billion Payment to Mauritius as Part of Chagos Deal
The British Labour Party has proposed a payment of nearly £9 billion to Mauritius as part of a contentious agreement concerning the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands, the Daily Mail reported. The article, published on the newspaper’s website on January 8, outlines that the proposed payment would amount to approximately £90 million per year (around 5.4 billion Mauritian Rupees) over an initial 99-year lease, culminating in a total of £8.9 billion (approximately 540 billion Mauritian Rupees).
According to the Daily Mail, information sourced from the Financial Times and Bloomberg indicated that the UK government is now considering advancing a portion of these payments in order to finalize the agreement.
The report further suggested that this initiative is aimed at concluding the deal before Donald Trump potentially resumes his position as President of the United States on January 20.
While officials at Downing Street have not denied that the Chagos Islands agreement might indeed involve an annual payment of £90 million, they have refrained from commenting on the ongoing discussions at this time.
Notably, a Mauritian delegation led by Attorney General Gavin Glover departed for the UK on Tuesday evening.
This visit is part of the discussions aimed at negotiating the return of the Chagos archipelago to Mauritius.
