Charles Cartier’s tenure as Chief Executive Officer of Air Mauritius is nearing its end, with reports suggesting that his departure might be imminent. The decision has been made at high levels within the organization to expedite Cartier’s exit, alongside other key executives, due to what has been described as a “largely unsatisfactory” performance since he took on the role on March 6.

Air Mauritius has faced persistent troubles, including frequent flight delays and cancellations, which have become almost daily occurrences.

These operational issues have culminated in the airline being ranked as the 10th worst commercial airline worldwide by AirHelp in early December 2024.

Once celebrated as a flagship of the Mauritian aviation sector, Air Mauritius has failed to restore its image and is currently in a precarious financial state.

During a parliamentary discussion on the economy on December 10, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam expressed his concerns, stating that “in accordance with the Companies Act 2001, Air Mauritius is deemed insolvent.”

As of the end of June 2024, the airline reported a substantial accumulated deficit of €331.1 million (Rs 16.5 billion).

The financial results for the fiscal year 2023/24 revealed a net loss of €21.4 million (Rs 1.05 billion), a stark contrast to the previous year’s net profit of €48 million (Rs 2.36 billion).

Officials within the government have confirmed that Cartier will be removed from his position, although they declined to provide further details.

Cartier’s appointment was a political one from the prior administration, which likely complicates his situation. The new government is eager to appoint a different CEO.

However, Cartier is not the only executive under scrutiny. Other senior executives are also facing potential dismissal.

Rajesh Beeharry, who retired in 2022 but returned as Manager of Guest Relations in June, is among those mentioned frequently in discussions about restructuring.

Roodesh Mutylall, the Head of Corporate Finance, is also under examination. Mutylall initially joined the company in August 2018, resigned in early 2023, and returned on October 22 following Cartier’s appointment.

Sameer Baichoo, who was appointed Chief Operating Officer of Air Mauritius on May 6, is also subject to review before a decision regarding his future with the company is made.

He has been criticized for allegedly campaigning for the Lepep alliance in the No. 5 electoral district (Pamplemousses/Triolet) during the last general elections.

As Air Mauritius grapples with leadership changes and ongoing operational challenges, the future of the airline remains uncertain, with stakeholders awaiting the next steps in a critical transition period.
