PM’s Office: ” No Official Cases of HMPV Recorded in Mauritius ”
No official cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been detected in Mauritius, according to Defi Media’s source within the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The confusion arose following a Facebook post by an individual alleging that two cases of the virus had been reported. However, the PMO confirmed that there has been no verification of these supposed cases at this time.
A spokesperson from the Ministry of Health emphasized:
“What the public needs to understand is that there has been no new information regarding this virus in Mauritius. Cases have already been identified since 2022, and there is no reason to panic.”
The Ministry reassured the population that there is no cause for concern but is encouraging everyone to continue practicing preventive measures, similar to those recommended during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Human Metapneumovirus is currently circulating at higher rates in China and some regions of India, but it is not new to Mauritius.
According to a study conducted by a private clinic, several HMPV cases were recorded in Mauritius during 2022, 2023, and 2024.
“Typically, HMPV accounts for about 4% to 5% of all circulating viruses during the winter months worldwide, based on existing studies,” the Ministry stated.
It also pointed out that there is no specific treatment available for this virus, which is why testing is not routinely conducted.
Despite these developments, Dr. Pauvaday and Dr. Vasantrao Gujadhur, both former directors of health services, reiterated that there is no reason for alarm.
They encouraged the public to remain informed and to maintain standard health precautions.
