Authorities in Mauritius, including the Prime Minister, are closely monitoring the rise in metapneumovirus cases currently being reported in China. This virus, which was first identified in 2002, has affected the island nation in the past. Symptoms associated with metapneumovirus include flu-like signs such as cough, fever, sore throat, and breathlessness.

In a recent statement, a senior official from the Ministry of Health confirmed that a preparedness plan is already in place to address this situation.

The country has been on high alert since last week, with heightened surveillance at both the airport and the seaport.

The authorities have emphasized the importance of monitoring the potential for mutations of the virus, as these changes could significantly alter its impact.

They are in regular communication with the World Health Organization to stay updated on developments.

Mauritius is specifically monitoring five countries, including China and some neighboring nations.

“Passengers arriving from these countries are being closely observed to track the evolution of the virus,” the official elaborated.

Health officials are conducting follow-ups with these travelers to gauge any developments regarding their health.
