Quad Bikes in Daruty Forest, Police Take Action

The concerns raised by hikers regarding the dangers posed by quad bikes in the Daruty Forest in Petit-Raffray have finally prompted a response from law enforcement. Last August, Le Mauricien publication highlighted the increasing risks associated with reckless quad biking, which not only jeopardized public safety but also disrespected the environment.
In a decisive move to counter this issue, the Goodlands police station has installed large boulders at the entrance of the forest and plans to conduct regular patrols to deter violators.
These measures are aiming to protect the forest, spanning 108.22 hectares and is home to a diverse array of plant species, offering a glimpse into the rich history and natural beauty of the island.
Participants in what can only be described as reckless joyrides seemed to treat the forest trails as if they were in the Dakar Rally.
However, they overlooked a critical detail: quad bikes are prohibited in the area due to the significant harm they cause to both wildlife and vegetation.
The authorities are now committed to curbing this disturbing trend, which has frequently led to confrontations between walkers and young riders.
According to a police statement, “The police have investigated the complaints and have communicated with the Forestry Department regarding the problem.
To prevent quad bikers from accessing the trails, iron rods and large rocks have been placed by the relevant authorities.
Additionally, the police have initiated static policing in Daruty to reassure members of the public using the trail:
One vehicle and two police officers will be present from 1 PM to 2 PM, another vehicle and two officers from 5 PM to 6 PM, and one vehicle and one officer from 5 AM to 6 AM.”
With these new measures in place, the community can feel more secure as they enjoy the natural beauty of the Daruty Forest.
