The former Chairman Emeritus of the BAI Group, Dawood Rawat, has reiterated his commitment to advocating for the clients of the now-defunct company who are still waiting to be reimbursed. Speaking to reporters in Port-Louis in December 2024, he emphasized the need for patience and understanding among clients, particularly given the current financial constraints of the government.

At a recent gathering with clients holding insurance plans like Super Cash Back Gold, Rawat assured attendees that he would work collaboratively with the government to address their financial situation.

“I will not take a single cent until you, the BAI clients, receive what you are owed,” he asserted.

This meeting was held at Taher Bagh and was organized by social worker Salim Muthy, who has advocated for justice for clients affected by the BAI’s liquidation in 2015.

A Positive Initial Meeting with the Prime Minister

During the meeting, Rawat provided an overview of the BAI’s dismantling and shared his future plans for resolving issues related to reimbursements.

He revealed that he had already held a “positive” meeting with Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam and expressed his confidence in the government’s commitment to finding a solution, despite acknowledging the nation’s financial hardships.

“Everyone knows the government is struggling financially. However, this does not mean that the issue of reimbursements is being neglected,” he stated.

Rawat described his role as a mediator between former BAI clients and government authorities, but he cautioned that no swift resolution could be guaranteed.

“I am not making promises, as this matter does not lie in my hands but rather in those of the government,” he explained.

In light of the economic challenges and uncertainty surrounding the repayment process, Rawat implored BAI clients to trust him and allow time for the necessary proceedings.

“I ask for your trust and request that you give me time to work, as this is not an easy task. We must progress based on the financial resources available to the state,” he said.

He stressed that there are no intentions to evade responsibility or to withhold payments from clients.

Instead, he emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts with the government, taking into account the country’s financial priorities.

“There is no intention to withhold reimbursements. My mission and strategy revolve around negotiating with the government to find a viable solution,” he concluded.
