In a poignant New Year’s address, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam reflected on the recent general elections held on November 10, emphasizing that the people of Mauritius demonstrated the paramount importance of their freedom over monetary concerns. He stated, “The Mauritian people have shown that their liberty is more important than money or anything else.”

Ramgoolam asserted that the elections were instrumental in liberating the nation from the grasp of what he described as a “clan of mafiosi” that had monopolized power in Mauritius.

He expressed that many citizens felt a sense of relief and freedom following the election results, signaling an end to a troubling chapter in the country’s governance.

Looking ahead, the Prime Minister expressed optimism for 2025, which he labeled as a year of hope and reconstruction.

He underscored that his government’s priority will be to revitalize the economy while also enhancing the international image of Mauritius.

“I am confident that, together with my government team, we can rebuild our country,” Ramgoolam declared, assuring citizens that they will fulfill their promises gradually and consistently.

According to the Prime Minister, changes have already begun to take shape.

Despite the “disastrous” economic situation, he noted that the government has honored its commitment to pay a 14th month salary to a significant portion of the population.

He also highlighted recent reductions in fuel prices and ongoing negotiations related to Diego Garcia and the Chagos archipelago.

“Rebuilding a nation requires significant sacrifice, patience, and relentless hard work,” he stressed.

Ramgoolam announced that in the coming days, the government will unveil the “program speech” of the Alliance du Changement, detailing all measures aimed at restoring the country’s vitality.

Furthermore, he addressed the critical issue of drug trafficking, announcing a strict “zero tolerance” policy against drug barons.

“We will be uncompromising in our fight against the drug trade,” he asserted.

“I have no doubt that we will achieve our objectives. You can trust me, and I will honor that trust,” Ramgoolam concluded, as he emphasized his commitment to lead Mauritius towards a brighter future.
