Tragic Drowning of 77-Yr-Old British Tourist in Pointe-du-Diable

An elderly British man tragically drowned while snorkeling at Pointe-du-Diable in the southeastern region of the island on the afternoon of December 24.
According to reports, around 11:45 AM, the Ocean 5 catamaran was anchored in the lagoon near Fond-Blanc when several tourists, including the elderly gentleman, entered the water, which was approximately 1.2 meters deep, to enjoy snorkeling.
By 12:10 PM, all the passengers had returned to the catamaran, except for the British individual.
Concerned, the captain and crew initiated a search for the missing tourist, but their efforts were in vain.
The search was subsequently expanded with the assistance of a small rescue boat attached to the catamaran.
Tragically, after a search, the crew located the lifeless body of the tourist approximately 50 meters from the catamaran.
Rescue efforts were immediately initiated, but despite their attempts, he showed no signs of life.
The man was then brought ashore at the Grande-Rivière-Sud-Est dock, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy conducted by the police’s forensic doctor, Dr. Ananda Sunnassee, confirmed that the cause of death was asphyxiation due to drowning.
