Traffic Violations: 9 Drivers Test Positive for Alcohol

On Sunday, December 22, the Defensive Driving Instructors Association, along with Minister of Land Transport Osman Mahomed, organized the distribution of 2,000 safety vests. This initiative took place during a time when authorities heightened road surveillance efforts to ensure the safety of all road users.

During the festive season, many motorists were intercepted and fined for various traffic violations, including speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, and failure to adhere to traffic regulations.

In a notable enforcement operation that spanned from the night of December 24 to the early hours of December 25, a total of 4,594 vehicles were stopped.

Authorities issued 1,033 citations, of which 79 were for speeding, and nine drivers tested positive for alcohol in breathalyzer tests.

These measures aimed to raise public awareness about the importance of responsible driving, particularly during a period characterized by an increase in travel.

The police is urging all drivers to comply with traffic laws to ensure everyone’s safety.

Furthermore, on December 24, Minister Osman Mahomed held a press conference, urging motorists to enjoy the festive season responsibly, paying special attention to their own safety as well as that of others.

He emphasized the need for vigilance among road users and indicated that law enforcement would take a strict stance against violations related to speed, alcohol, drugs, and the use of mobile phones while driving.

The minister also reminded everyone that wearing a fluorescent vest is mandatory from 6 PM onwards, and failure to comply would result in a fine not exceeding Rs 5,000.

In a further effort to enhance safety, Osman Mahomed, alongside the Defensive Driving Instructors Association, distributed 2,000 safety vests to motorcyclists at the Place d’Armes on December 22, reinforcing the commitment to road safety during this busy festive season.
