Safety Regulations for Thaipoosam Cavadee & Maha Shivaratree Celebrations

Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam has announced key measures to ensure the smooth conduct of the Thaipoosam Cavadee and Maha Shivaratree celebrations scheduled for February 2025. Emphasizing the safety of the pilgrims, the Prime Minister stated that this will be a top priority during these important religious events.
This announcement came during a working group meeting held on Monday afternoon, December 23, at the Treasury Building in Port-Louis, which included participation from several ministers and relevant stakeholders.
To enhance the organization of these celebrations, Prime Minister Ramgoolam revealed the implementation of new regulations concerning the dimensions of kanwars, which are the ceremonial structures carried by devotees.
These regulations will dictate specific limits on both the length and width of the kanwars. The aim is to ensure a safe and orderly experience for all participants.
During his address, the Prime Minister emphasized that the essence of these celebrations should be spiritual, rather than competitive.
He urged pilgrims to embody discipline and a spirit of sacrifice throughout the festivities, stating that these values are essential to maintaining a respectful and harmonious atmosphere.
The Prime Minister described the meeting with stakeholders as a constructive dialogue aimed at gathering their insights and addressing any potential challenges that may arise during the celebrations.
He underscored the importance of ensuring that health services are available continuously, 24 hours a day, to support the needs of pilgrims during this busy period.
Additionally, Prime Minister Ramgoolam announced plans for a site visit to Ganga Talao in January 2025. This visit, which will include multiple ministers, aims to verify that all necessary arrangements are in place to facilitate the influx of pilgrims.
With these initiatives, the government is committed to ensuring the Thaipoosam Cavadee and Maha Shivaratree celebrations proceed smoothly, while prioritizing the safety and well-being of all participants.
