Increase in Respiratory Infections Sparks Call for Caution

Recent reports indicated a significant rise in acute respiratory infections across public hospitals, including cases of COVID-19. In light of this concerning trend, the Ministry of Health is urging the public to remain vigilant. They advise wearing masks in poorly ventilated spaces to help mitigate the spread of these infections.

Data are showing that the number of new acute respiratory infection cases has risen from 2,617 to 2,859 from the week of December 2 to December 8, compared to the following week, December 9 to December 15.

This increase is also including confirmed cases of COVID-19, as noted by Dr. Fazil Khodabocus.

While this uptick is placing the current figures slightly above those recorded during the same period last year, health officials assure the public that the situation remains manageable.

Nevertheless, vigilance is still crucial, emphasized both Dr. Aswamed Dinassing, the interim Director-General of Health Services, and Dr. Khodabocus.

The doctors pointed out that the warm and humid climate is conducive to the spread of viral infections.

Furthermore, sudden temperature changes, such as moving between air-conditioned and outdoor environments, may exacerbate respiratory issues.

Dr. Khodabocus recommended setting air conditioners to a temperature between 23°C and 24°C, avoiding excessively low settings around 16°C.

“The body requires time to adapt to these temperature fluctuations, which is why some individuals quickly develop colds, experience sore throats, or suffer from bronchial discomfort,” explained Dr. Dinassing.

In some cases, individuals may even develop ear infections.

To protect themselves, the doctors advised wearing masks in crowded or poorly ventilated areas and emphasize the importance of regular hand hygiene—specifically washing hands thoroughly with soap and water.

They also recommended that anyone experiencing persistent flu-like symptoms consult a healthcare professional promptly in order to receive appropriate treatment.
