As of now, the number of fatal road accidents since the beginning of the year has surpassed 120, raising concerns about public safety. The most vulnerable group remains motorcyclists, with 56 reported deaths to date. According to police statistics, the majority of those killed this year fall within the age range of 26 to 50 years, accounting for 54 fatalities—nearly half of all victims. In the younger demographic, ages 16 to 25, 28 individuals have lost their lives.

Official data reveals a consistently high rate of fatalities among young road users every year. A representative from the Traffic Branch stated:

“These young motorists often lack experience. Very few of them practice Defensive Driving.”

The police are calling for increased parental responsibility, noting that many young individuals possess only a learner’s permit.

“Some youths are receiving large motorcycles as gifts, despite their inadequate experience on the road. Parents need to consider what type of motorcycle is suitable for a learner.

Please do not place your children’s lives in jeopardy,” officials from the Central Police Headquarters warned.

In anticipation of the upcoming festive season, the police have announced an intensified enforcement campaign, stating:

“There will be more controls, not only on heavily trafficked roads but everywhere.”

Additionally, police have reported that 21 retirees over the age of 60 have lost their lives this year, while 15 fatalities have occurred in the 51 to 59 age group.

Tragically, there has been one victim under the age of 15. Furthermore, 19 pedestrians have died this year, including a recent case involving a 25-year-old Indian national who was the victim of a hit-and-run incident in Bel-Air-Rivière-Sèche.

The death toll includes 16 motorists and an equal number of passengers in four-wheel vehicles.

Additionally, six motorcycle passengers and six cyclists have also perished in accidents this year.

Comparatively, at this time in 2023, there were 131 recorded deaths, with a total of 138 road fatalities for the entire previous year.

Although there seems to be a slight decline in figures this year, the police are urging the public to act responsibly, particularly during the festive days ahead.

The Central Police Headquarters continues its awareness campaign while officers in the field take the opportunity to provide advice during routine checks.
