On Wednesday, December 18, authorities in Mauritius seized over 240 million rupees worth of rolling papers, specifically 16 million units of “Ti Papie,” from a warehouse located in Jinfei, Riche-Terre.

The contraband items were smuggled into the country, hidden within a consolidated cargo shipment that had been imported from Malaysia.

This illegal operation came to light following a coordinated effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) Customs, the Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit at the port, the Maritime Intelligence Cell of the National Coast Guard (NCG), and the criminal investigation brigade.

On Saturday evening, December 21, one individual was apprehended as part of the investigation, and authorities are actively pursuing additional suspects in connection with this significant smuggling operation.

The discovery of such a large quantity of contraband is highlighting illegal trade in Mauritius, prompting calls for rigorous measures to combat smuggling activities.
