Police Raise Awareness on Safe Driving Practices

On Monday, December 16, the police inaugurated a road safety awareness campaign at the Central Barracks, aimed at educating motorists about essential safety measures as the year comes to a close. Running until December 31, the campaign sought to inform drivers about the various tools utilized by law enforcement during traffic stops and highlight the serious risks associated with road accidents.
Key Highlights of the Campaign:
- Demonstration Tools: One of the star attractions of the campaign is the “roll-over” demonstration, which vividly illustrates the severe consequences of not wearing a seatbelt.
- Assistant Police Superintendent Ashok Mattar emphasized that individuals who are not buckled up risk being ejected from their vehicles, leading to potentially life-threatening injuries.
- Alcohol Impairment: The campaign also focuses on the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.
- The Traffic Branch representative explained that alcohol distorts vision, slows reflexes, and disrupts coordination.
- To help the public understand these effects, the police are offering alcohol simulation goggles for hands-on experience.
- Public Invitation: The police encourage the public to visit the Central Barracks to explore these educational tools and understand the importance of responsible driving.
Legal Ramifications of Unsafe Driving:
- Motorists caught driving recklessly may face fines ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000. Additionally, their driving licenses may be suspended or revoked, and they could face prison sentences of up to 8 years.
- Using a mobile phone while driving, even with hands-free kits, can result in fines of up to Rs 10,000. The same penalty applies to those who fail to wear their seatbelts.
By fostering awareness and understanding of these critical issues, the police hope to encourage safer driving habits and reduce the incidence of road traffic accidents.
