Ameena Cougni is overwhelmed with grief after the recent death of her husband, Paul Sameer Cougni, who tragically lost his life in a hit-and-run accident on the highway in Bagatelle. The 71-year-old Cameroonian, who had made Mauritius his home following his marriage, had been showing early symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and had seemingly taken a wrong turn while trying to return home.

“This ending feels so unjust,” Ameena lamented as she reflected on the loss of her husband.

“My three children are heartbroken over the death of their father.”

Paul Sameer Cougni was struck by a vehicle near the construction site of the American Embassy, an area where he had been reported missing since Monday afternoon, December 9.

He had left his home in Highlands to visit relatives but never returned, leaving his family in deep distress.

In the early hours of December 10, police were alerted to the discovery of a lifeless body on the median at Bagatelle.

Officers from the Moka police station arrived on the scene to find Cougni lying there with severe injuries to his head, right arm, and elsewhere on his body.

Surveillance footage from the Safe City system revealed that he had been struck by a vehicle just before 11 PM, with the car identified as a metallic blue luxury model.

Authorities quickly identified the driver as Fadil Khodabocus, who has since been arrested.

Ameena was left heartbroken after learning the details surrounding her husband’s death.

“They abandoned my husband to suffer alone after hitting him,” she said, stricken by the tragic loss.

Following the accident, the police launched an investigation through the Crime Intelligence Unit of the Eastern Division.

They reviewed footage from surveillance cameras and identified the time of the incident.

Acting on precise information, investigators arrived at Khodabocus’s residence in Sadally, Vacoas, and discovered the implicated vehicle, which had a shattered windshield, parked in his garage.

Khodabocus’s wife confirmed that he had been behind the wheel during the incident.

Back in Terre-Rouge, Ameena Cougni remained inconsolable.

She shared that her husband had recently begun experiencing Alzheimer’s symptoms, and his family had been closely monitoring his movements.

“Normally, when he goes to visit my sister, he always finds his way home. But since he was in Phoenix, he may have thought the road was straightforward, which led him to Bagatelle,” she explained.

The couple had shared 39 years of marriage, having been together since 1985.

“My husband was generous and always willing to help others; he did not deserve such a fate,”

Ameena expressed through tears. “He was left to suffer alone on that road with his injuries, and it is heartbreaking to think the driver didn’t even attempt to take him to the hospital.

Perhaps he could have survived. He had a fractured pelvis and lay there in excruciating pain, without anyone to help him.”

Ameena’s sorrow resonates deeply as she seeks justice for her husband, holding onto the hope that those responsible for his death will be held accountable.
