Concerns Raised Over Infrastructure at Dr. Idrice Goomany School

As the start of the 2025 school year approaches, the two deputies for Constituency No. 3 (Port-Louis-Maritime–Port-Louis-Est), Ehsan Juman and Aadil Ameer Meea, who also serves as the Minister of Industry, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Cooperatives, visited the Dr. Idrice Goomany Government Primary School in Plaine-Verte yesterday, December 12.
Their aim was to assess the adequacy of the school’s infrastructure for students and to implement corrective measures as soon as possible.
The visit included school officials, teaching staff, and Allybye Aubdoolah, the Zone 1 Director. Notably, Shakeel Mohamed, the Deputy for Constituency No. 3 and Minister of Housing and Land, could not join the visit due to his ministerial responsibilities.
During the visit, both deputies expressed their serious concerns regarding the condition of the school’s infrastructure.
Ehsan Juman remarked, “The first observation is that it is unacceptable for children to return to school under such conditions.
There are dangerous equipment here posing risks to the children; parents have every reason to worry about potential injuries.
Furthermore, there is no playground, thus depriving children of essential physical activities, which puts them at a disadvantage compared to students from other schools.
There are also pressing issues regarding the state of the toilets and water supply. We are here now, which gives us the opportunity to address these issues.”
Juman also criticized the ongoing neglect of the school over the years. “The Zone Director, head teachers, and staff are collaborating; however, it is evident that there has been a decline over an extended period.
Education is a priority, and it is crucial to establish the best services and infrastructure possible.
The Minister himself (Mahend Gungapersad) spoke to me personally and assured me that he would do everything necessary to resolve the issues we are raising,” he added.
Minister Ameer Meea highlighted the purpose of the visit:
“This visit is part of our ongoing efforts to identify all neglected and poorly maintained infrastructure, where maintenance work by various services has not been carried out regularly, including cleaning and upkeep.
There is a great deal of work to be done, especially with the rainy season approaching.
We are not just identifying problems; we also have solutions, and this meeting was organized with that mindset.”
He indicated that further visits are planned to include schools, both primary and secondary, across the constituency as well as facilities in other sectors.
