The Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) has successfully hosted a high-level Business & Policy Dialogue, bringing together five government ministers and the institution’s top leaders. The event, held at the Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel, aimed to strengthen public-private dialogue in service of the country’s economic development.

The meeting was chaired by M. Charles Harel, President of the MCCI, and brought together Hon. Dr Jyoti Jeetun, Minister of Financial Services and Economic Planning; Hon. Dhananjay Ramful, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and International Trade; Hon. Michaël Sik Yuen, Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection; Hon. Aadil Ameer Meea, Minister of Industry, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, and Cooperatives; and Hon. Dhaneshwar Damry, Junior Minister of Finance.

The discussions focused on key structural issues affecting the Mauritian economy, including the setting up of an “Impact Regulatory Assessment Framework”, environmental improvement, business costs, and human capital development.

These areas were identified as essential pillars for future growth.

In his opening remarks, M. Charles Harel emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue between the public and private sectors in addressing current challenges and identifying growth levers for the economy.

He noted that this collaborative approach is crucial for maintaining Mauritius’ competitiveness on the international stage.

Dr Drishtysingh Ramdenee, Secretary General of the MCCI, highlighted the institution’s strength in fostering economic actors and transforming discussions into concrete actions.

He cited initiatives such as Xport Accelerator, mid-conference sessions, and partnerships with GS1 Mauritius as examples of the MCCI’s commitment to supporting local businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The discussions also shed light on the importance of the MCCI’s role in supporting national priorities.

The institution’s 175-year history has seen it evolve into a central player in driving economic development.

Particular attention was given to current challenges and opportunities, including improving the business climate, regulatory predictability, and optimizing available resources.

These elements were identified as essential for consolidating a strong and resilient economy.

Through its sectoral commissions, the MCCI analyzed specific sectoral needs in depth while its flagship Xport Accelerator program currently supports 15 SMEs in their international development.

The institution also maintained active engagement in international trade negotiations.

The specialized commissions of the MCCI, presided over by members of the board of directors, brought expertise to key sectoral themes such as commerce, industry, and higher education.

This structure ensured balanced representation of different components of the Mauritian economic fabric and enables effective feedback from the business community.

This Business & Policy Dialogue marks the beginning of a series of high-level consultations planned by the MCCI.

This dynamic will take on particular significance in 2025, which marks the institution’s 175th anniversary.

This milestone will provide an opportunity to deepen existing collaborations and establish new synergies for harmonious economic development.

This approach will enrich continuous dialogue between government and business communities.
