Dialysis Patients’ Death During COVID-19: FFC Report to Be Released?

Will the truth finally come to light regarding the circumstances surrounding the deaths of 11 dialysis patients at New Souillac Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic? Two parliamentarians, Ehsan Juman and Dr. Farhad Aumeer, are set to question Health Minister Anil Bachoo about the possibility of making public the report from the Fact-Finding Committee (FFC) established to investigate these deaths.
For Deputy Aumeer, this issue is of paramount importance.
“As a consulting physician, I am eager to learn what this report contains. The previous health minister, Kailesh Jagutpal, vehemently refused to publish it, and this has caused significant distress to the families of the victims, who are seeking the truth,” he stated.
He emphasized that requests for the report’s publication have been made multiple times; however, the former health minister, with the backing of the former Speaker of the National Assembly, Sooroojdev Phokeer, consistently evaded the issue by citing confidentiality concerns.
Support for the need to disclose the report also comes from Bose Soonarane, secretary of the Renal Disease Patients’ Association.
“The release of this report has been long awaited. It is crucial for ensuring justice and considering potential compensation for the suffering endured,” he noted.
Soonarane believed that, alongside the FFC report, the findings of the Medical Negligence Standing Committee and the Medical Council should also be made public.
The association has requested a meeting with Minister Anil Bachoo to discuss this matter and other related concerns.
No Negligence on the Part of Doctors
A Defi Media source close to the Medical Council asserted that “the doctors did their job to the best of their abilities.”
This statement followed an independent investigation into the deaths of the dialysis patients.
According to this internal source, the medical staff acted within the limits of the information and resources available at the time.
The investigation concluded that while appropriate care was provided, underlying health conditions contributed to complications leading to the patients’ deaths.
Recommendations have been proposed to prevent such tragedies in the event of future outbreaks.
