After a month of relentless work, the fire at the Mare-Chicose landfill has been successfully contained. The blaze broke out in the early hours of November 5, prompting authorities to struggle to gain control and prevent its spread. Fortunately, the situation has now been brought under control, and even ahead of schedule.

In a cabinet meeting held on November 29, officials initially projected that the fire would be fully extinguished by mid-December 2024.

Daily efforts by firefighters played a crucial role in combating the flames.

Additionally, a coordination committee, led by a senior official from the Ministry of Environment, convened daily to synchronize the actions and interventions necessary to tackle the fire and assess the progress made.

The strategy employed to extinguish the fire involved several key methodologies. Heavy machinery, such as excavators, was used to break apart the mass of waste.

Water was then applied to cool down the hot spots, and the extinguished waste was covered with soil to prevent re-ignition.

These concerted efforts have been instrumental in managing what posed a significant environmental threat.
