President & Vice-President of the Republic Elected this December 2024
Dharam Gokhool, a former Member of Parliament from the Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM) and former Minister of Education under the Labour Party government, has been elected President of the Republic following a consensus between the Labour Party and the MMM. The Vice-Presidency has been awarded to Robert Hungley, the Deputy Secretary General of the MMM.
Gokhool was unanimously elected to the presidency during a session of the National Assembly on Friday afternoon, December 12. He began his political career in 1976 and joined the MMM in 1980.
He first stood for election in 1982 under the MMM-PSM alliance during the legislative elections, which resulted in a historic 60-0 victory for the alliance.
After a split in 1983, Gokhool remained loyal to the MMM but faced defeat in the No. 7 constituency (Piton-Rivière-du-Rempart) during that year’s elections.
He was elected in 1991 as part of the MSM-MMM alliance for the No. 15 seat (La Caverne/Phœnix).
Following this, he joined the Labour Party and served as Minister of Education in the government led by Navin Ramgoolam from 2005 to 2010, having been elected in 2005 for the No. 9 constituency (Flacq/Bon-Accueil).
Additionally, Gokhool is a former Associate Professor at the University of Mauritius. He succeeds Prithvirajsing Roopun, whose term ended on December 2.
Robert Hungley Elected Vice-President
Robert Hungley has been elected Vice-President of the Republic, succeeding Eddy Boissézon. He was also elected unanimously during the same session of the National Assembly on Friday, December 12.
At 67 years old, Hungley is a member of the MMM and has run for parliamentary elections in 2010 and 2019 for the No. 18 (Quatre-Bornes/Belle-Rose) and No. 4 (Port-Louis-Nord/Montagne-Longue) constituencies, though he was not elected in either attempt.
He previously served as the Mayor of Beau-Bassin/Rose-Hill from 2004 to 2005 and has worked in the private sector. Hungley currently resides in Roche-Brunes.
