Foreign Counterfeit Banknotes, The Central Bank Urges Vigilance
The Bank of Mauritius has issued a warning regarding counterfeit foreign banknotes reportedly in circulation. In an official statement, the bank emphasized that it is the sole institution authorized to issue Mauritian currency, including banknotes and coins in rupees.
The Bank of Mauritius also noted that it has the expertise required to verify the authenticity of local currency.
However, the bank clarified that it does not have jurisdiction over foreign currencies, and therefore, it cannot guarantee the authenticity of foreign banknotes or coins.
In light of the potential risks associated with counterfeit currency, the public is advised to remain vigilant.
If anyone suspects they have encountered counterfeit banknotes, they are encouraged to report their concerns to the police.
