Bank of Mauritius to Issue New Rs 1,000 Polymer Banknotes
The Bank of Mauritius (BoM) has announced the upcoming issuance of Rs 1,000 banknotes made from polymer, in accordance with Article 35 of the Bank of Mauritius Act 2004. This information was shared in a press release from the BoM on Monday, December 2.
According to the press release, while the new polymer banknotes will closely resemble the current paper notes, they will incorporate advanced security features.
Notably, the Rs 1,000 note will showcase an image of the dodo within a transparent window and will also feature a security element called ‘Spark® Flow Prime’.
The newly introduced polymer banknotes will circulate alongside the existing paper currency.
Both forms of currency will remain legal tender, meaning that both will be accepted for transactions across the country.
Furthermore, the BoM indicated that polymer banknotes in denominations of Rs 100 and Rs 200 are set to be introduced in 2025.
By that time, the Rs 2,000, Rs 1,000, Rs 500, Rs 200, and Rs 100 banknotes will all transition to polymer material, enhancing the security and durability of the nation’s currency.
