Pledge for Environmental Protection at Pomponette Rally
In a passionate address at an event in Pomponette this Sunday, December 1, Ashok Subron, leader of the Rezistans ek Alternativ (ReA) party, made a bold statement regarding the political accountability of his party. “If you find us failing, we ourselves will vote for a law to remove us from power within two years,” he declared, underscoring his commitment to transparency and responsiveness to the people’s needs.
Subron emphasized that Rezistans ek Alternativ is dedicated to fulfilling the mandate given to them by the citizens during the elections.
He reiterated the party’s strong opposition to the construction of new hotels on the beaches, asserting the necessity of preserving these public spaces for future generations.
During the gathering, which celebrated the victory of the Alliance du Changement alongside local Mauritians, Subron highlighted the significance of Pomponette beach to his movement.
Prior to joining the Alliance du Changement, ReA had advocated for the beach to be designated as a public area.
He assured attendees that this promise would soon be realized, marking a critical victory for the preservation of public spaces.
Reflecting on the long-standing struggle to safeguard Pomponette beach, Subron recalled the challenges posed by land granted for hotel development during the previous government.
This decision prompted the mobilization of the collective “Arret kokin Nu Laplaz,” and he praised ReA members for their courageous protests against the project.
“We did not hesitate to break down barriers to bring our fight,” he asserted, urging Mauritians to continue their battle against injustice, even under the new government.
Subron also highlighted the ecological richness of the waters surrounding Pomponette, describing them as one of the most biodiverse marine areas in Mauritius.
He articulated the crucial role that the coastline, beach, and sea play in the Mauritian identity, stating, “What makes us Mauritian are our coasts, our beaches, and our ocean.
Secondly, it is our Mauritianism. In our future, there will be beaches and Mauritianism. Never forget this,” he emphasized, touching on the values that facilitated the Alliance du Changement’s success in the 2024 legislative elections.
