In a significant development for the National Assembly, Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra has been appointed as the new Speaker, a nomination put forth by Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam. The decision received unanimous support from both sides of the chamber during the assembly’s first session on Friday, November 29.

In her inaugural address, Aumeeruddy-Cziffra expressed heartfelt gratitude to the members of Parliament for their trust, emphasizing that the future of the country now rests in their capable hands.

Her guiding principles, succinctly captured in the motto “Rights, Respect, and Responsibility,” reflect her commitment to uphold the values she believes are essential for the assembly.

“I will listen to you with an open mind but without fear or favor,” she stated, highlighting her intention to foster an environment of transparency and fairness.

Aumeeruddy-Cziffra also expressed her intention to draw inspiration from the exemplary leadership of her predecessor, Sir Harilall Vaghjee.

During a subsequent press interaction, Aumeeruddy-Cziffra clarifed her stance on partisanship, asserting that while she maintains friendships within the Assembly, she will not show favoritism.

“Shirin means sweetness. It will be a blend of both…,” she added with a touch of humor, reflecting her approach to leadership.

Aumeeruddy-Cziffra’s election is seen as a pivotal moment for the National Assembly, as she aims to restore its dignity and integrity while navigating the complexities of parliamentary duties.
