Fateemah Dilmohamed, a 21-year-old resident of Grand Baie, suffered a devastating injury resulting in the loss of her leg due to an accident on a travelator at the Grand Baie La Croisette shopping center on November 23. Following her accident, parts of the travelator were found to have been replaced shortly before the incident.

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Grand Baie Criminal Investigation Division (CID), which is probing the circumstances surrounding the accident.

As part of this inquiry, the chief technician responsible for maintenance at Grand Baie La Croisette has been questioned.

He detailed the maintenance work carried out on the travelator, including the replacement of defective parts just days prior to the accident.

In his statement to investigators on November 27, the technician outlined his role within the shopping center and the maintenance procedures he oversees.

Although he provided insights into the repairs completed on the travelator, he was not questioned about the exact events that unfolded on the day of the accident, when Dilmohamed became entangled in the machine.

Following his interrogation, the technician, accompanied by his attorney, was allowed to leave.

A second hearing has been scheduled this week to further address repair procedures and the specifics of the parts that were replaced.

The investigation has also involved interviews with the technical team from Manser Saxon, the company that installed the travelator, and foreign experts have been dispatched to assist in dismantling the device.

In the aftermath of the accident, multiple police teams, alongside forensic specialists, conducted thorough examinations of the scene.

Medical Recovery Efforts

Dilmohamed’s condition following the accident has been a focal point of concern.

Health Minister Anil Bachoo provided updates on her medical status, stating that she is currently stable but needs further surgical interventions.

She was transferred to India for advanced medical care after sustaining severe injuries, including the loss of her leg, which was crushed in the accident.

The orthopedic and plastic surgery teams in India have been working to reconstruct Dilmohamed’s foot and ankle.

According to Minister Bachoo, doctors have placed screws to support the reconstruction of her heel, which was severely injured.

Unfortunately, some parts of her heel and left ankle were found to be necrotic and had to be removed.

Additionally, her tibia was damaged, affecting the arteries in that area.

The surgical team is planning significant reconstruction work, including the restoration of her heel, ankle, and foot, along with muscle repair and skin grafting in the coming days.

The aim is to create a functional, insensitive prosthetic for her heel, enabling her to walk again, with potential nerve reconstruction to restore sensation in her foot.

Minister Bachoo emphasized that Dilmohamed is receiving the necessary care and attention in India and noted that the complexity of her injuries would have made treatment in Mauritius particularly challenging.
