Pointe-aux-Sables: Clash of Supporters Over Chagos Sovereignty Issues
On Wednesday afternoon, November 27, a significant gathering occurred at the Chagos Refugees Group Centre in Pointe-aux-Sables. Supporters of Misley Mandarin and Olivier Bancoult came together to assert their respective positions regarding the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands.
This demonstration was prompted by a challenge issued by Misley Mandarin, the founder of the BIOT Citizens group and a staunch advocate for maintaining British sovereignty over the Chagos archipelago.
He directed his challenge to Olivier Bancoult, the leader of the Chagos Refugees Group, during a live debate on the “Info Soirée” program the previous evening.
During this heated exchange, Bancoult claimed to have the backing of the majority of native Chagossians, while Mandarin attempted to contest this assertion.
The two leaders are at odds over ongoing negotiations between Mauritius and the United Kingdom regarding the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands.
Mandarin is arguing for the continued British control of the archipelago, while Bancoult is fighting for its integration into Mauritius.
This standoff highlights the divisions within the community concerning the future of the Chagos Islands, as both factions seek to rally support for their causes.
