Investigation Launched Following Serious Accident at Grand Baie La Croisette

Authorities have initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding a serious accident that occurred on Saturday, November 23, at Grand Baie La Croisette, where 21-year-old Fateemah Dilmohamed suffered the amputation of her leg after her feet were caught and severely injured by a malfunctioning escalator.

On the afternoon of the incident, officers from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) at Grand Baie, led by ACP Ramkeelawon and Superintendent Nuccheddy, promptly ordered the defective escalator, known as a travelator, to be taken out of service and the area to be secured for an investigation.

Today, November 25, technicians from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure are expected to inspect the travelator to determine the precise causes of its failure.

Their findings will be submitted to law enforcement officials as part of the ongoing investigation.

As part of the inquiry, the Duty Manager of Grand Baie La Croisette was interviewed by the police on Saturday, November 23.

The following day, the Maintenance Manager of the facility was also questioned by Inspector Mootoo’s CID team.

He indicated that the responsibility for maintaining the faulty travelator fell to Manser Saxon, the company tasked with its upkeep.

This information is considered crucial for the investigation, which will include questioning employees of Manser Saxon today in order to clarify their responsibilities regarding the escalator’s maintenance.

Manser Saxon, which installed the travelator, is responsible for its ongoing maintenance.

In addition to witness testimonies, investigators have seized surveillance footage from the location of the accident, as well as the maintenance logbook for the travelator.

As the investigation progresses, it is anticipated that potential legal repercussions may arise, including the arrest and possible charges against the employee responsible for the operation of the escalator.

This incident has raised significant concerns about safety measures and operational protocols at public facilities.
