On Saturday, November 23, during a visit to the Mare-Chicose landfill site, Minister of the Environment Rajesh Bhagwan, joined by junior minister Joanna Bérenger and local MPs from constituency number 11, addressed the current fire situation.

With the fire still raging, Minister Bhagwan issued a public appeal for donations of soil, a crucial resource needed to smother the active flames.

“We require at least 25,000 tonnes of soil to fully control the fire. Thus far, we have managed to extinguish 9,000 square meters, but 31,500 square meters remain ablaze,” he stated.

Regarding the possibility of deploying a water-bombing aircraft to expedite firefighting efforts, Joanna Bérenger explained the challenges of such an approach.

“Experts have indicated that the fire is situated nearly a meter beneath the waste. Water would simply run off the surface without reaching the deeper combustion areas,” she clarified.

The ongoing efforts to combat the fire highlight the need for community involvement and the effective strategies required to tackle such environmental emergencies.
