Pravind Jugnauth Accepts Full Responsibility for 2024 Election Defeat
Pravind Jugnauth, the former Prime Minister and leader of the Mauritian Social Democratic Movement (Mouvement Socialiste Militant, MSM), has publicly accepted full responsibility for the defeat of the Lepep Alliance in the legislative elections held on November 10. This statement was made during a meeting on Tuesday, November 19, with the party’s defeated candidates at Sun Trust, where he conducted a brief analysis of the significant loss suffered by the outgoing government.
During the meeting, details that emerged indicated that Jugnauth acknowledged the campaign’s deterioration in its final week, which he attributed in part to the influence of the Missie Moustass Leaks on the electorate.
He informed his party members that he was open to stepping down as leader; however, his close associates quickly interjected, noting that there was currently no one willing to take on the leadership of the MSM.
Jugnauth mentioned that the party would take a six-month hiatus to allow the newly established Alliance of Change, led by Navin Ramgoolam, to settle in and begin its governance.
He also hinted at an impending restructuring of the MSM in the coming months.
According to sources, all MSM members of the outgoing government attended this crucial meeting, with the notable exception of former Minister Sudheer Maudhoo, who was reportedly absent during the discussions regarding the electoral defeat.
