High Surf Warning: Boats Ashore, Fishermen Speak Out
November 21 morning in Tamarin, as in other coastal regions of Mauritius, fishermen found themselves forced to take an unexpected break from their work. The reason for this disruption is a high surf warning in effect until 4 PM today, a consequence of deteriorating sea conditions following the passage of Tropical Depression Bheki.
As of 4 AM, Bheki was located approximately 115 kilometers off the east coast of Mauritius.
According to the meteorological station, the open sea remains highly turbulent, with swells and waves measuring between 4 and 6 meters.
These conditions are also impacting the lagoons, and during high tides, waves may crash onto low-lying coastal areas.
Authorities have strongly advised fishermen, boaters, and the general public to refrain from venturing out to sea or along the beaches.
It is noteworthy that the waves are expected to start gradually diminishing by the end of this afternoon.
We spoke with several fishermen in Tamarin this morning, who shared the challenges they face during inclement weather.
Their stories reflect the harsh realities of working at sea and the impact that adverse weather conditions can have on their livelihoods.
