The National Crisis Committee (NCC) convened yesterday under the leadership of Dr. Dhanandjay Kawol, the Senior Chief Executive (SCE) of the Ministry of Local Government and Disaster Management, to assess the current situation in Mauritius and Rodrigues regarding the impending arrival of Tropical Cyclone Bheki.

Representatives from several agencies attended the meeting, including the Central Water Authority, the Central Electricity Board, and the Mauritius Police Force, along with other essential public service representatives.

During the meeting, Dr. Kawol highlighted that according to the Mauritius Meteorological Services, Cyclone Bheki is approaching Mauritius and is expected to be at its closest point to the island November 21 morning.

He mentioned that the cyclone is currently classified as a severe tropical storm, but its intensity is anticipated to decrease, transitioning to a moderate tropical storm as it nears the coast of Mauritius.

Dr. Kawol explained that the NCC’s meeting focused on reviewing the precautionary measures already in place, as well as identifying additional actions that need to be taken during and after the cyclone’s passage, in coordination with all relevant stakeholders.

He reassured attendees that necessary preparations have been made across all designated shelter centers throughout the island.

In a separate update, Dr. Kawol addressed the fire at the Mare Chicose landfill site, confirming that operations are underway at six locations to expedite response efforts.

He reported that the fire has been contained over an area of 6,500 square meters of the affected site.

However, approximately 35,600 square meters still require intervention. The SCE also sought to reassure the public about the air quality in the vicinity.
