Emergency Services & Landfill Site Operator Battle Against Blaze Continues
The fire that broke out on November 6 at the Mare-Chicose landfill still engaging authorities’ extensive efforts. Despite the work of firefighters and the site’s operator, flames persisted across multiple areas, compounded by steep terrain that complicates firefighting efforts.
Following a crisis meeting on November 19, the Crisis Commission has decided to escalate operations by expanding the intervention zone to encompass six different sectors.
The landfill operator has committed to providing excavators, bulldozers, and water tankers to facilitate the transportation of soil to the site.
Firefighters and the operator are collaborating closely to extinguish the flames, cool burning waste, and cover it with dirt to smother the fire.
Simultaneously, the National Environment Laboratory is conducting daily air quality monitoring in surrounding areas, including Mare-Chicose, Rose Belle, Cluny, Deux Bras, Union Park, Nouvelle France, and Forest Side.
As of November 19, a statement from the Ministry of Environment reported that no toxic gas emissions have been detected.
