Atma Bumma, the former communication consultant for Air Mauritius, has come forward to clarify his departure from the airline amid weeks of speculation. In a statement given to Défi Quotidien on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, Bumma confirmed, “I have not been with Air Mauritius since October 14.”

Bumma initially joined Air Mauritius in February under a six-month contract, which was set to conclude around the time of the general elections.

He described his role as “sensitive,” particularly given the crisis the airline was facing at the time.

“There was no Chief Executive Officer, and significant tensions existed both within the management team and in external communications,” he explained.

Looking back at his contract, Bumma noted that its natural conclusion aligned with the timing of the elections.

“When the elections came, it was clear that my contract was coming to an end,” he stated.

He acknowledged, however, that the ambiguity surrounding his exit may have led to misunderstandings.

There has also been criticism regarding Bumma’s monthly salary, which was reported to be Rs 250,000 during his tenure with Air Mauritius.

In response, he compared his compensation to that of a permanent communications director at the company, a position that is currently vacant and commands a salary of approximately Rs 450,000 per month.

“Contrary to what some may suggest, I did not receive any additional allowances,” he affirmed.

Bumma also pointed out that the costs associated with an external firm hired for communications services were significantly higher, yet that agency offered no on-site presence.

Despite his official departure, Bumma expressed his willingness to assist Air Mauritius if needed.

“If the management requires my assistance, I am available on a voluntary basis,” he offered, adding that he had already communicated this willingness to MK’s CEO, Charles Cartier.
