In a harrowing incident that unfolded at Bo’Valon Mall in Mahébourg on November 24, 2020, police officer Dimple Raghoo tragically lost her life during a monitored drug delivery operation. Recent court proceedings have shed light on the circumstances surrounding her death, with surveillance footage playing a pivotal role in the ongoing trial.

The court session on November 19, 2024, revealed critical evidence as surveillance images from the mall were presented to Judge Luchmyparsad Aujayeb.

The footage captured the moments leading up to Officer Raghoo’s fatal accident involving a car driven by Wazil Ally Meerkhan, accompanied by passenger Dylan Bryan Josue Carman, both of whom work as pizza delivery drivers.

According to the footage analyzed during the trial, Officer Raghoo stumbled and fell moments before being struck by the vehicle.

At precisely 5:37 PM, a white Honda was seen entering the mall’s parking area.

Shortly thereafter, Officer Raghoo and her colleague, Officer Gilbert Benoit Arlanda, were observed closing the gate.

By 5:44 PM, the Honda accelerated to exit the mall, prompting the officers to attempt to intercept it.

The vehicle collided with Officer Arlanda, propelling him against the gate.

As Officer Raghoo rushed towards the gate, she lost her balance and fell just a second before the vehicle hit her as well.

The Honda then crashed through the gate, and Raghoo’s body was located approximately 500 meters away.

In court, Inspector Dewoo provided testimony about the recovery of Officer Raghoo’s body, while Sergeant Sameer Rosunally from the Cybercrime Unit of the Central Criminal Investigation Department detailed how the footage was obtained from the mall on November 25, 2020, and subsequently transferred onto a CD for further examination.

The defense raised questions regarding Officer Arlanda’s actions during the chaotic moments, suggesting that he might have tripped Officer Raghoo.

However, this allegation was firmly denied by the witness.

Wazil Ally Meerkhan has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of Dimple Raghoo and attempted murder concerning Officer Gilbert Benoit Arlanda.

Dylan Bryan Josue Carman has admitted guilt for causing bodily harm leading to the death of Officer Raghoo, as well as for assaulting Officer Arlanda.

In the current proceedings, Meerkhan is represented by attorney Mᵉ Sanjeev Teeluckdharry, while Carman’s defense team includes Mᵉs Siddhartha Hawoldar and Devina Deonarain.

The prosecution is being led by Mᵉs Nadjiyya Dauhoo, the Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, along with Principal State Counsel Navish Jheelan and State Counsel Mohammad Irfaan Mittoo.
