Thank-you Meeting :“No Vengeance, but Accountability is Necessary!”
Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam addressed the public during a thank-you meeting for the Alliance du Changement at Place d’Armes in Port-Louis on Sunday, November 17, just six days after the coalition’s electoral victory. He emphasized that his government would not adopt a policy of vengeance, but that there is a need for accountability regarding past actions.
“We will not engage in a policy of vengeance like they did, but they must acknowledge what has transpired (referring to the outgoing Government). The public must be informed. Everything will be done transparently,” he stated.
Echoing Ramgoolam’s sentiments, Paul Bérenger, leader of the Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM), assured attendees that the new government of the Alliance du Changement will also refrain from a vindictive approach.
Instead, he highlighted the importance of holding individuals accountable. Bérenger made these remarks during the same meeting at Place d’Armes.
He reiterated that the government will honor the commitments made during the electoral campaign.
“The 14th salary must be paid in 2024, and we will ensure that it happens. We will manage to deliver on our promises,” he asserted, emphasizing that the coalition will maintain its focus on fulfilling its obligations.
Moreover, Bérenger addressed the expectations of the 60 elected representatives, reminding them that not everyone would be able to secure a ministerial position.
He concluded by assuring the audience that municipal elections, as well as those for district councils, would take place “sooner rather than later.”
