Harvesh Seegolam, the Governor of the Bank of Mauritius (BoM) and his deputies Mardayah Kona Yerukunondu and Hemlata Sadhna Sewraj-Gopal, have announced their intention to resign from respective positions. Seegolam plans to step down as soon as a new governor is appointed, ensuring a smooth transition and preventing any vacancy in the bank’s operations.

Seegolam has served as the governor since March 1, 2020, and was also appointed president of the Financial Services Commission (FSC) on July 3, 2024.

His deputy, Mardayah Kona Yerukunondu, has held the title of first deputy governor since February 24, 2020, while Hemlata Sadhna Sewraj-Gopal was appointed as the second deputy governor on March 1, 2020.

The announcement of the resignations comes shortly after a significant political shift in Mauritius.

On November 15, President Prithvirajsing Roopun appointed Rama Krishna Sithanen as the new governor of the central bank, following a recent general election.

The opposition political alliance, led by Navin Ramgoolam, achieved a decisive victory, winning 60 out of 62 seats in the National Assembly and securing 62.6% of the votes in the election held on Sunday, November 10.

This victory is marking Ramgoolam’s fourth term as prime minister.
