Rampersad Sooroojbally has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Police (CP) by Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, succeeding Anil Kumar Dip. This change comes in the wake of a politically charged atmosphere following the victory of the Alliance for Change.

Anil Kumar Dip’s resignation follows a tenure marked by numerous family scandals and allegations of mismanagement within the police force.

Faced with mounting pressure for political change, Dip stepped down, reflecting a broader shift within the administration.

His departure has elicited mixed reactions from the public; while some viewed him as a steadfast figure serving the executive branch and opposing certain regime critics, others perceived his exit as a necessary step toward restoring public confidence.

The Alliance for Change is planning to revitalize key administrative positions as part of its commitment to transparency and efficiency in governance.

The appointment of Sooroojbally signals a fresh approach, with expectations from the populace for a new era of accountability within the police force, particularly in light of the controversies surrounding Dip’s leadership that tarnished the image of law enforcement.

Rampersad Sooroojbally, previously the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and head of the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU), takes on this pivotal role with a mandate focused on reforming and rehabilitating the police’s reputation.

His immediate challenges will include restoring law and order, re-establishing the discipline among police forces, and improving the overall image of the institution.
