The Mare-Chicose landfill has been grappling with a challenging fire that has proven difficult to extinguish due to the complexity of the terrain and the saturation of the site. The Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service has stated that the fire is currently “under control.”

An official from the Curepipe fire station noted that the area affected by the blaze is gradually decreasing, thanks to the efforts being implemented.

To combat the flames, a variety of resources have been deployed, including firefighters, excavators, water tankers, bulldozers, and water cannons, as confirmed in a statement from the Ministry of Environment.

On Wednesday, November 14, Joanna Bérenger, a member of the new government coalition Alliance du Changement, visited the technical landfill site at Mare-Chicose.

During her visit, she emphasized the urgent need for sustainable measures to address both the recurring fires and the ongoing saturation issues of this critical facility.

Bérenger is awaiting the appointment of the new Minister of Environment to address these pressing concerns.
