Dawood Rawat Plans Return to Mauritius After New Govt Takes Office
Dawood Rawat, the former Chairman Emeritus of the British American Investment Group (BAI), is planning to return to Mauritius, but not before the newly elected government officially takes office. This announcement was made in a post on the Facebook page “BAI Forever” on Tuesday, November 12.
According to Javed Bolah, a spokesperson for Rawat’s family, the former BAI chairman is currently awaiting the establishment of the new government, which won a decisive victory in the legislative elections held on November 10.
Rawat intends to inform the new government of his return to Mauritius, and updates will be provided to the public accordingly.
Dawood Rawat left Mauritius in early 2015, citing health issues.
Later that same year, the BAI group was dismantled by the then-government amid allegations of involvement in a “Ponzi scheme.”
However, these allegations have not been substantiated in any court of law.
At its peak, the BAI group included several well-known enterprises, such as the Apollo Bramwell private hospital, Bramer Bank, the Courts retail chain, and the automotive dealership Iframac, among others.
In response to the government’s actions against BAI, Rawat filed a lawsuit in the Commercial Court of the Supreme Court through his lawyer, Me Gilbert Noël.
He is pursuing legal action against the Bank of Mauritius (BOM), PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the Financial Services Commission (FSC), and BAI administrators André Bonieux, Mushtaq Oosman, and Yogesh Rai Basgeet.
Rawat is seeking Rs 22 billion in damages, claiming that the revocation of the banking license for Bramer Banking Corporation Ltd (BBCL) in 2015 was politically motivated and had a devastating impact on his business empire.
Following the victory of the Alliance du Changement, many supporters have reached out to Dawood Rawat, encouraging him to return home.
This outpouring of support inspired the recent Facebook post announcing his intended return.
Javed Bolah emphasized that while there is significant enthusiasm within the British American Investment group for Rawat’s return, it is crucial that he waits for the new government to be fully established before making his move.
He expressed gratitude on behalf of Rawat and his family for the messages of support they have received.
