New Govt’s Priority Measures: Fuel Price Reductions & 14th Month Payment
As the newly formed government prepares to take office, several key initiatives are identified as top priorities by the Alliance du Changement. Immediate actions will be taken to address these issues once the government is in place.
According to a reliable source, the government aims to implement a reduction in fuel prices for gasoline and diesel right away, a commitment made during the recent electoral campaign.
This move is part of a broader strategy to alleviate the rising cost of living, with additional measures being considered as the new administration begins its work.
Another significant priority is the payment of the 14th month salary, scheduled for December. This initiative also fulfills a campaign promise made by the Alliance du Changement.
Furthermore, the government plans to ensure the continuation of disability pensions for individuals who have reached the age of 60.
This policy aims to allow these recipients to benefit from a double pension.
The government intends to extend this measure to those who are already above this age threshold and whose disability pensions were automatically terminated upon reaching retirement age.
Before embarking on these initiatives, the new administration’s first order of business will be to assess the current state of the economy.
A source within the party expressed concerns about potentially unpleasant surprises, stating, “We need to understand what we are dealing with.”
Following this economic audit, additional priorities may arise. There are indications that municipal elections might be held soon, leveraging the overwhelming 60-0 victory of the Alliance du Changement.
This would provide urban residents with the opportunity to elect new representatives to local councils, as the last municipal elections took place in 2015 and have since been postponed four times.
Departures and Appointments
A wave of change is expected to sweep through various public institutions as well.
With limited exceptions, all chairpersons and board members of statutory bodies and state-owned enterprises—including Air Mauritius, the Central Electricity Board (CEB), the Central Water Authority (CWA), Landscope (Mauritius) Ltd, the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation, the Independent Broadcasting Authority, the Information & Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA), and the State Bank of Mauritius—will be replaced.
The new government is set on a path of immediate action, aiming to address the economic concerns of its citizens while also refreshing leadership within key public institutions.
