Towards a 66-Member Parliament, Appointment of Only 4 “Best Losers”
The results of the recent general elections have left no room for doubt, marking the historic third consecutive 60-0 triumph for the Change Alliance. This is raising questions about the future configuration of the National Assembly. Through universal suffrage, 62 members of parliament have been elected, including two representatives from the Organization of the People of Rodrigues.
Next, it is the responsibility of the Electoral Commission to identify the “best losers.”
According to our proportional representation system, the Commission can appoint up to eight best losers.
This designation is based on two primary criteria: the percentage of votes received by these best losers and ethnic representation.
Dr. Rama Sithanen, a political science expert, explained:
“The appointments are intended to address the under-representation of four communities, considering the number of deputies from each of these communities in relation to their percentage in the 1972 population census.”
The Défi Media Group consulted him for insights on which candidates are likely to be designated as best losers by the Commission.
Based on the aforementioned criteria and a calculation system delineated in our Constitution, Dr. Sithanen has concluded that only four best losers will be appointed, all from the general population.
“There will only be four best losers, and all will be from the general populace.
The two appointed will be from Rodrigues.
As for Xavier-Luc Duval, he will not be selected,” Dr. Sithanen stated, noting that he did not have details on other losing candidates from the general population at the time of the interview.
The probable names of the other two best losers are as follows:
- Martheline Edouard from the Rodrigues Movement
- Reddy Augustin from the Rodrigues Movement
- Adrien Duval from the Alliance Lepep
- Joe Lesjongard from the Alliance Lepep
